Reading comprehension

You are not required to understand every word in the texts.

What kind of test?

  • Lasts for 50 minutes (Finnish and Swedish for 60 minutes)
  • Contains 3-6 tasks
  • Includes different excerpts e.g. letters, notes, advertisements, news, articles and stories
  • Some of the excerpts can be leafed through, some have to be read thoroughly

What is evaluated?

  • Understanding of the topic or the main point
  • Ability to understand different meanings of selected words through the excerpts
  • Comprehension of some details
  • Ability to identify different meanings based on the excerpts

Types of questions

  • Multiple choice: The task has a question with three alternative answers and one right answer. The number of questions depends on the length of the excerpt.
  • Right or Wrong: The task makes a claim which has to be judged as right or wrong. The amount of claims depends on the length of the excerpt.
  • Open-ended questions: The task consists on answering to questions based on the excerpts. Some of the answers can be brief some a bit more broad.

Writing

It is advised to write more rather than less. However, the tasks are not evaluated by the length of the text, so one should not over lengthen them.

  • Includes short writings e.g. postcards, notes, or slightly longer e.g. letters, letters to the editor

What is evaluated?

  • Ability to produce a short and understandable text which is in accordance with the task
  • Ability to write of abstract matters

Types of questions

  • Guided questions: This is the most common type of task in the writing subtest. The instructions will state to whom the text will be written and in what situation. There can be guidelines concerning the content of the text that have to be followed. Also a short excerpt might be handed, which serves as a base for the text.
  • Headlines: These tasks are composed of a few given headlines or claims. One must be selected and written about.

Listening comprehension

All of the tasks will be heard through a CD or cassette player.

What kind of test?

  • Lasts approximately for 30 minutes
  • Contains 3-5 tasks
  • Includes messages, proclamations, news, advisories, advertisements, conversations or interviews on different topics
  • Some of the excerpts are listened to once, some twice

What is evaluated?

  • Understanding of the topic or the main point
  • Ability to figure the meaning of selected words through what is heard
  • Ability to perceive the stance or objective of the speaker
  • Ability to understand details

  • The performance is recorded for evaluation

What is evaluated?

  • Ability to communicate according to the guidelines
  • Ability to talk in an adequate fashion in ordinary situations
  • Ability to express and explain opinions

Types of questions

  • Conversations: The task requires answering to statements heard from the player with the help of tips provided in the prompts. Each conversation has 3-6 statements.
  • Occasions: There are 6-8 occasions with differing themes that have to be answered rather quickly with the help of tips.
  • Statements: The task consists of a preparation of a given topic of 1-2 minutes and a 1-2 minutes long statement.
